Terms of service
In effect from 2026-08-29
These are the terms you agree to by using Recipe Box. They are meant to be readable. Where something is genuinely a limit on what you can expect from us, it is written as one rather than dressed up.
Who you are agreeing with
Recipe Box is operated by Life Ascension LLC, a limited liability company registered in the United States. Recipe Box is a trading name of that company. In these terms, "we" means that company and "you" means you.
Your account
You need an account to keep recipes. Give us a real email address — it is how we confirm it is you and how you get back in if you forget your password. Keep your password to yourself; anything done from your account is treated as done by you.
You must be at least 13 years old.
Your recipes are yours
You own everything you put in. Nothing here transfers ownership of your recipes or your photographs to us.
You give us permission to store your content, process it as needed to run the service, and show it to the people you have chosen to show it to — the members of your household, and anyone holding a link you created. That permission exists only so the service can function, and ends when you delete the content or your account, except where a household has kept a copy of a recipe you shared with it, as described below.
We do not use your recipes to advertise to you, sell them, or publish them anywhere you have not chosen.
Recipes that are not yours to upload
A list of ingredients is generally not protected by copyright. The writing around it — the method, the headnote, the story about a grandmother — usually is, and belongs to whoever wrote it.
So: photograph your family's cards freely, and copy in recipes you were given. Do not paste in a copyrighted recipe from a book or a website and then share it publicly by link. You are responsible for what you upload, and if someone tells us you have posted their work without permission we may remove it.
Sharing
A share link makes one recipe readable by anyone who has the link, without an account. That is what it is for. Treat it as public: we cannot control where a link is forwarded. You can revoke a link at any time, which stops it working, but we cannot retrieve anything already read or copied.
When you leave a household, it keeps a copy of the recipes you had shared with it, credited to you. You keep your originals. This is deliberate — a family should not lose a recipe because someone left — and by sharing a recipe with a household you agree to it.
What you may not do
- Upload anything unlawful, or anything you do not have the right to upload.
- Use the service to store things that are not recipes.
- Attempt to access anyone else's account, recipes or photographs.
- Scrape, overload or attack the service, or work around its limits.
- Resell the service or pass it off as your own.
Card reading
When you ask us to read a recipe card, the photograph is sent to a third party whose software transcribes it. See the privacy policy for who and what is kept.
Transcription is frequently wrong in small ways and occasionally wrong in large ones. Check what it produced before you cook from it. We do not warrant that a reading is accurate, and quantities in particular deserve a second look.
What the service costs
Nothing, currently. If that changes we will say so clearly and in advance, and we will not begin charging for something you already have without telling you first.
Availability
We try to keep the service running and your recipes safe, and we take that second part seriously. But this is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. We do not promise it will be available without interruption, free of faults, or that data will never be lost.
Keep your own copy of anything you cannot bear to lose. Your profile page will produce a complete export — your recipes, your photographs at full resolution, and a page readable without us. We built it precisely so that trusting us is not your only option, and we would rather you used it than took our word for it.
Ending it
You can stop using the service whenever you like and ask us to close your account. Take an export first; account deletion is not reversible.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or that we are legally required to close. If we do that to you and it is not an emergency, we will tell you why and give you a chance to get your recipes out.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the service. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of the amount you have paid us in the previous twelve months or one hundred US dollars.
Nothing here limits liability for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we will say so on this page and update the date at the top before it takes effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the new version.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States, and any dispute will be heard there.
